What is Therapy for Teens?

Therapy is a safe, supportive space where your teen can talk through life’s challenges with a trained and compassionate mental health professional. Also known as individual therapy or talk therapy, it helps teens navigate emotional, social, and behavioral struggles in a way that’s tailored to their unique experiences.

In one-on-one sessions, teens are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings openly. They’ll explore things like stress, anxiety, school pressure, identity, relationships, family dynamics, or anything else that’s impacting their well-being. Therapy can help teens build healthier coping skills, boost self-confidence, and improve communication.

Working with a licensed therapist gives teens the tools they need to better understand themselves and handle tough situations with more resilience. Over time, therapy supports long-term growth, emotional balance, and healthier relationships at home, in school, and with friends.

Many teens find that therapy gives them a sense of control, clarity, and hope. They gain the tools to better understand how to navigate life’s complex challenges on their own, as well as how to ask for help when they need it. Help your teen get the resources they need to face the future ahead.

How will therapy help my teen?

  • While teens are almost adults, the adolescent brain is still developing, most notably in the regions associated with emotional regulation, impulse control and long-term decision making. Working with an experienced therapist can help them develop the skills and knowledge to know what to do with overwhelming emotions.

  • While your teen may want to open up to you, they might feel too embarrassed or afraid to share everything on their mind. Having another trusted, supportive adult in their life can provide a safe outlet, helping them explore their thoughts and emotions in a way that fosters self-discovery.

  • Our therapists model and teach assertive communication skills, including how to make connections, how to set healthy boundaries, and how to end unhealthy relationships. These important skills will help them navigate life’s most difficult communication challenges.

  • When a person knows themselves, they become confident. When a person knows the world, they become humble. Working with a therapist can help teens work through their challenges without damaging their self-worth, learn how to make the most out of their talents and strengths, all while staying true to their personal morals and values.

What can we expect in therapy for teens?

1. We’ll learn get to know them

In the first few sessions, your teen’s therapist will take time to understand what’s bringing them to therapy and how they can best support your family. They’ll learn about your teen’s experiences, family background, health, challenges, culture, beliefs, and what matters most to them. Together, the therapist and your teen will talk about goals for therapy. These early sessions are an important opportunity to build trust and begin a strong, supportive relationship focused on helping your teen feel better.

2. We’ll create a plan just for them

Your teen’s therapist will work closely with them to create a personalized plan that supports their unique needs and goals. As your teen shares their experiences and challenges, the therapist will introduce evidence-based strategies designed to promote emotional well-being. These approaches will be thoughtfully tailored to fit your teen’s personality, values, culture, and what matters most to them. Throughout the process, the therapist will regularly check in with you and your teen to see what’s working, what’s not, and adjust the plan as needed to keep moving in the right direction.

3. We’ll collaborate on their journey towards healing

Most teens meet with their therapist for about 50 minutes, once or twice a week. Each session is tailored to your teen’s needs and focused on their goals. For some, that might mean learning new coping skills. For others, it may be a space for reflection, mindfulness, or simply having someone who listens without judgment. Every teen’s journey is different, and while progress can take time, many begin to feel a positive shift in their mental well-being after just a few sessions.
